Fed: Federal govt considers health ID card
The federal government is reportedly considering a national system of health card identificationnumbers.
The Australian Financial Review says the system would be used to track cardholdersfrom cradle to grave through both the private and public health systems.
The paper says federal Health and Ageing Department chief information officer ROB WOODINGtold a health industry conference recently that the introduction of a universal identifierwas one of the department's top priorities.
But the paper also quotes an unidentified senior doctor who warned that the introductionof such a system raises the spectre of a de facto Australia card.
Federal privacy commissioner MALCOLM CROMPTON says his office is watching the developmentof the proposal closely.
