Vic: Labor looks set for increased upper house majority

Vote counting from last weekend's Victorian state election has showed the Labor government'slikely to increase its majority in Victoria's upper house.

In Western Port province, Labor's GEOFF HILTON has a lead of 557 votes over the LiberalParty's CAMERON BOARDMAN, with almost all votes counted.

A spokesman for the Victorian Electoral Commission says Mr BOARDMAN has asked for are-count and this will take place on Wednesday.

Labor's also leading the count in HIGINBOTHAM, where victory would give it a 24th seatin the Legislative Council and control of the house.

Winning Western Port as well would give Labor 25 of the 44 Legislative Council seats.

In North Western Province, the National Party's DAMIEN DRUM is 1,590 votes ahead ofLabor's MARG LEWIS and looks set to win.

This would give the Nationals the 11 seats needed for party status in the Victorian parliament.
